Hi everyone I just installed SPUtility.js on my brand new SP 2013 Foundation environment. The plugin actually works (the selectbox changes depending on the value I supply), but however it also generates a JS error:

```
Uncaught TypeError: Object function each(iterator, context) {
try {
this._each(iterator, context);
} catch (e) {
if (e != $break) throw e;
}
return this;
} has no method 'Validate'
```
This error actually raises if I click on Save or if I manually change the selectbox value manually. Just so you know the error is raised by clientforms.js.

Any hints? Thank you.
Comments: Hey raz3r, Could you post a sample of the code you are using? SPUtility doesn't have a "Validate" function so perhaps it is conflicting with something else? Thanks, Kit

Great, I'm glad you were able to get it working!

Right now, it only works with out of the box forms.... not customized forms.

I'm working on the jQuery version of SPUtility right now... maybe once I have time I'll look at adding support for custom forms as well. :)

Firefox messages I get when running this on a custom form:

 TypeError: SPUtility.GetSPField(...) is null
      var StatusValue = SPUtility.GetSPField('Division').GetValue();

and

 TypeError: $(...) is null
      $("link[rel='stylesheet']").each(function()

Kit - thanks for the hints - however adding that to the screen did not work. I moved the same code to a default edit form (not my custom one modified in SPD) and I couldn't get the alert to fire.

I read through some of your other documentation on getting fields to pop, and those started working - so I went with those. I've added the PreSaveAction to it - so thanks for the nice toolset.

Does this solution work on custom forms? I can only get this script to work on OOTB forms - nothing else.

PointerBrother,
This error could happen for a variety of reasons. In your case, it looks like you may be attempting to use SPUtility before your form has loaded.

Try this out:

I have the same issue - others must've found the simple answer and forgot to post back - I'm new to this utility - but the same issue.

SharePoint 2010

List that had custom forms - I have recreated a standard EditForm.aspx which is where this script is
not finding the field

SCRIPT:

The field "Reason for Test" is a choice field w/ 3 options.

 Static Name = ReasonforTest

I am not having any luck trying to make read only an "Enhanced Rich Text Column" using the following code:

That is sort of what I was leaning towards. I get the impression that people won't really need to upgrade... if someone is currently using SPUtility.js then it probably is working fine for them right now.

I am figuring out if I can get access to a 2013 environment. Hopefully I can still support all three versions though! We shall see.

First of all, kudos to your great effort!

Coming back to your question, I would suggest creating the JQuery version for SharePoint 2013 onwards and you could leave the existing version for SP2010 and SP2007

Description:

SPUtility.js is a JavaScript library used to make modifications to SharePoint's list forms (NewForm.aspx and EditForm.aspx in a survey, custom list or library). This library depends on Prototype.js. SPUtility.js works with SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2007.

As of March 2013, a jQuery version is in the works, your feedback is appreciated!

Features:

Set or get field values in Document Libraries, all sorts of List forms (custom lists, issues, etc), and survey
Make a field read only
Hide a field from view
No server side code to deploy!

This can be used for:

Preventing a user from selecting a value when an item is initially created (ex: Status must be PENDING when the item is created)
Hiding fields from a submitter but allowing the field to be edited (or vice versa).
Autopopulating the form using a URL with query parameters

Keep in mind that SPUtility.js and documentation are still a work in progress... and that it won't work in every situation.

It currently will NOT work with:

External list forms (working on a fix 4/22/2012)
Forms that have been customized using Infopath
Certain (weird) fields, see the matrix of supported fields

Installation

To use the library, you can just upload SPUtility.js and prototype.js into a document library and put a Content Editor Web Part with some JavaScript code on whichever page you want to modify! Detailed instructions are on the Installation page.

Usage Examples:

Set a Text field's value

SPUtility.GetSPField('Title').SetValue('Hello world!');

Set a Text field's value and make it read only

SPUtility.GetSPField('Title').SetValue('Hello world!').MakeReadOnly();

Make a Choice field read only

Before

SPUtility.GetSPField('Status').MakeReadOnly();

After

Set a People field and/or Make it Read Only

SPUtility.GetSPField('Assigned To').SetValue('Menke, Kit');

SPUtility.GetSPField('Assigned To').MakeReadOnly();

Hide a field from view

Before

SPUtility.GetSPField('% Complete').Hide();
